GRASS GARDENS (article first published : 2003-02-6)

The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on campus will host a fascinating collaboration between innovative Durban acoustic band Landscape Prayers and watershed contemporary dance company Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company in a season entitled Grass Gardens which runs from February 2 to 9.

Grass Gardens is a spectacular fusion with dancers from Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company and music from Landscape Prayers. Concept and choreography is by the acclaimed David Gouldie. The work is an “exciting, interactive spectacle exploring the cascading imagery seen in the landscapes of KZN," says FFFDC Director, Mark Hawkins.

FFFDC and Landscape Prayers have been working on this project for some time - a combined season of innovative original dance and music which is completely integrated. Not just musicians on stage playing music as a backing to which the dancers perform, but to fully engage the musicians into the performance with the dancers.

Grass Gardens will incorporate music from Landscape Prayers' past three albums as well as new material and compositions that has been prepared especially for this season. Grass Gardens promises to be an electrifying and visually spectacular feast with lighting by Michael Broderick and innovative costumes by Ebrahim Medell.

There will be two schools’ performances on February 5 and 7 at 11h00. Tickets R10 per learners (for every 10 learners). Book at Computicket. More information from 031 209 0142. Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company is supported by the National Arts Council.
