325,4KG (article first published : 1999-08-18)

The Nordic-South African cultural exchange programme, Shuttle 99, in association with The Playhouse Company will present top Finnish choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström and his company in the Playhouse Drama at the end of September. The South African dance company, Floating Outfit Project (FOP), has been invited to present Boyzie Cekwana’s ground-breaking work, Rona, alongside Kvarnström’s 325,4 kg, a collaboration guaranteed to produce visual and kinetic world-class theatre!

Kenneth Kvarnström’s sense of style and precision has produced work described as powerful, dynamic, sensual and uncompromising. His choreographic career began in 1987 and, after completing dance studies in Sweden, he founded his own Stockholm- based K. Kvarnström & Co. His rapid rise to fame in Sweden and Finland in the early 90's as well as a highly successful two year post as artistic director of the Helsinki City Theatre Dance Company led to him being labelled ‘The Finnish Meteor’.

325,4 kg, which premiered in April this year in Stockholm, combines the technical skill and strong personalities of four of Finland and Sweden’s best dancers with set design or ‘objects’ by artist Carouschka, lighting design by Maria Ros and the music of Swedish group Woosapower and Bach.

Highly-respected and multi award-winning South African choreographer Boyzie Cekwana has had a similarly meteoric career, with his choreography gaining widespread critical acclaim on an international level. His work Rona, which means ‘us’ in Sotho, premiered as a work-in-progress at the 1997 FNB Vita Dance Shongololo. Performed by Boyzie with Desiré Davids, and Itumeleng Mokgope, the work ritualistically unfurls in a space and time entirely of its own. In addition to the recorded musical collaboration of Hughs de Courson and Pierre Akendegue entitled Lambarena - Bach to Africa, Rona now includes live musical accompaniment by Thabani Sibisi who is no stranger to Durban audiences through his work with Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre.

Book now for the best of Scandinavian and South African dance theatre on September 29 and 30 at 19h30. Tickets R32 and R28. Book at Computicket outlets or www.computicket.com or Dial-A-Seat on (031) 369-9444 or Ticketline (after hours) on (031) 304 2753.
