MEDEA (article first published : 2002-10-8)

Euripides' classic story about Medea and Jason and the Golden Fleece is transported into present day South Africa with Medea, an exciting new dance theatre version at the Durban Institute of Technology.

The production compels with its tales of love, passion, betrayal and intrigue. Here is an ancient story that speaks of the extreme betrayal and alienation of a woman who then kills her two children as revenge against her deceiving, power-hungry husband, Jason. It could well be a modern day story. This is a fast-paced production of flight and fantasy with Jason and Medea leading us through themes of passionate love, romance, despair and that perennial tussle between the rational and the wildly emotional.

The story is told through a combination of dance, both contemporary and traditional, evocative contemporary and traditional music, slam poetry, fashion and video. Creon's world is depicted through the clean lines of contemporary dance, while Medea emerges from the heart of Kwa Zulu Natal. Medea's Nurse is a Sangoma while the narrator speaks rap poetry, providing a fresh and modern input into this tragic and enduring story.

The production features a cast of 30 with Dumisile Nqadi as Medea, Denton Douglas as Jason and Natasha Hosken as Creusa. All three dancers were nominated for FNB Vita Awards at this year's FNB Vita Award Ceremony for Dance.

The production is conceived and directed by Award winning director, Jay Pather who has recently produced Cityscapes and State of Grace. Both productions have received critical acclaim and popular appeal. Choreography is by Pather as well as Ntombi Gasa amongst others.

Fashion for the production is by the Institute's own fashion department under the guidance of Fiona Kirkwood.

The production has a very short season, running from October 9 to 12 at 19h00 at the Courtyard Theatre, Mansfield Road. Tickets R20 (R10 concessions) and bookings is at Computicket or through Tina at the Courtyard on 031 204-2532. Tickets will also be available at the door.
