KZN DANCE LINK AND JUNE 16 (article first published : 2002-06-3)

KZN Dance Link is producing Dance for Youth, a large-scale youth dance performance project on Youth Day, June 16, 2002, at God’s Golden Acre, Khayelihle, in Cato Ridge.

The production is led by Artistic Directors Ondine Bello, Sifiso Kweyama, and Sbonakaliso Ndaba, all from Phenduka Dance Theatre. The performers are drawn from ten youth groups, four of them from KwaMashu, one from Cato Crest, two ballet groups, one Kathak dance studio and one Bharata Natyam, as well as students on the Phenduka Dance Theatre Training Programme.

Over 100 young people are already in rehearsal. The production celebrates the achievements of the youth of South Africa in 1976, looks at the hopes raised since, the difficulties experienced in taking hold of our new opportunities, and the optimism we are able to experience as we support each other.

God’s Golden Acre is a very beautiful “resort” set in the hills of Cato Ridge. It is home to around 50 young children and babies, as well as the centre from which over 700 people in the valley are fed and supported as Aids bites deep into families.

Youth Day will include a choir competition in the morning, and the Dance for Youth performance in the afternoon. You can bring your own picnic, or buy food from the food stalls. Browse around the craft stalls, and walk around the grounds in the perfect autumn air.

Take the Cato Ridge exit off the N3, and follow signs to Highlands Resort. Funding for Dance for Youth has been provided by the National Arts Council, eThekwini Municipality, and the Arts and Culture Trust. For further information contact Lynn Maree on 031 206-1696.
