HILTON SPECIAL WEEK (article first published : 2002-04-22)

In a special week set aside for schools and public alike, the Hilton College Theatre will offer performances of Shades of Marguerite Poland (April 23 at 11h00 and 19h30); Mainland (April 25 at 11h00 and 19h30) and Othello (April 29 at 09h00 and 12h00 and April 30 at 12h00 and 19h30).

Directed by Caroline Smart who co-wrote the production with Patrick Collyer, Shades of Marguerite Poland is a dramatic exploration of the writer’s novel Shades which is part of the matric English syllabus. Shades is a romantic love story set against the backdrop of life on a mission station in the Eastern Cape in early Settler days where peoples' lives are dominated by drought and hardship. The conflict between traditional ancestor worship and Christianity as well as the burning question of migrant labour make this a compelling and topical story. The production looks at issues raised in Poland's novel and answers questions most often asked of her by those studying the book as a set work. Tickets R40 (R25 Concessions).

Durban's ever-innovative Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company presents Mainland directed by Robert Whitehead - another watershed season of contemporary dance: this time a double-bill dance season inspired by South African literature. The season uses members of FFFDC as well as guest artists from The Floating Outfit Project, in two new pieces both rooted in South African stories. The first - The Visiting- is inspired by stories of Robben Island and the second is inspired by Can Themba’s short story The Suit. Tickets R40 (R25 Concessions).

Mainland is made possible by generous sponsorships from NAC, BASA, Production Projects for lighting and XPR for sound. Also the ongoing support of the Royal Netherlands Embassy. (see review in Dance)

Directed by Garth Anderson, the Actors’ Co-Operative production of Othello follows the company’s recent touring season of Macbeth. Shakespeare’s tragedy is a major set work for all schools this year and this production promises to present the play in all its aspects of love, jealously, suspicion and retribution. Tickets R50 (R25 Concessions)

It is prudent to book theatre seats for this season in advance to avoid disappointment. Contact 033 343-0126.
