SWAMI THYAGARAJA MUSIC FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-04-15)

Presented in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, one of South Africa’s most famous annual events in the genre of classical Indian music and dance is well underway. Produced by the Indian Academy of South Africa, The Heritage Series touring programme started its KZN leg of the national tour on April 14.

The flagship presentation Swami Thyagaraja Music Festival is rated among the top such events in the world. It takes place this year at the City Hall on April 21 at 14h00. A joint production by the Andhra Maha Sabha of South Africa and the Indian Academy of South Africa, it is produced by Dr TP Naidoo, one of the leading figures in Durban’s classical Indian music and dance disciplines.

The Heritage Series features participants from India as well as South Africa. Some of the top guest performers from India include saxophone maestro Janardhan, sitar exponent Sivarama Rao and vocalist Meenakshi. Young India-trained Kugen Moonsamy is the principal artiste at the Swami Thyagaraja Music Festival.
