UMDUDO (article first published : 2002-01-23)

The seventh annual FNB Vita Dance Umdudo will be presented by FNB Vita Awards and the Rhodes University Drama Department in association with the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture at the Rhodes Theatre complex in Grahamstown from April 17 to 21.

The FNB Vita Dance Umdudo conforms to the established ethos and format of the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg which is, essentially, to provide a free and open platform for original choreography in new works. It is the choreographers-festival - not a competition. The festival is open to all choreographers, whether established or new, who wish to present new work on a professional stage. The event promotes and encourages creativity in dance, and choreographers are invited to take this opportunity to explore and develop emergent dance idioms.

The venue for the Umdudo, and all publicity, posters and programmes are provided free, at no cost to participating choreographers, dance companies or groups. Transport and accommodation costs, and costs directly related to presenting the dancework, such as costumes, musicians-fees, props etc, are the responsibility of the participants.

As broad a selection of work as is possible will be presented on the programme series. Individuals and companies taking part are not paid for their performance, but all choreographers staging work on the main programme will receive an equal share of the total box office receipts. The FNB Vita Dance Umdudo is intended as a stimulus for all who take part, for it is hoped that here the truly experimental, the avant-garde and the untried will take the stage.

Choreographers may enter one work only, and all choreographers must be 18 years or older. The selection and sequence of the programme will be made at the discretion of the organisers, and their decision is final.

If you have created a new dancework - whether contemporary, African, pantsula, fusion, jazz, ballet, dance theatre, performance art, mime or any other dance form that can be presented in a theatrical format - and would like to take part, contact Thozamile Ngeju or Calum Stevenson on e-mail C.Stevenson@ru.ac.za or phone 046 622 3897.
