BOOKING OPEN FOR UMBRELLA (article first published : 2002-01-3)

The 14th FNB Vita Dance Umbrella, an annual festival of original contemporary choreography and dance runs at the Wits Theatre from February 16 to March 16. In the last few years, the festival has grown into an international platform presenting works from Southern Africa, Europe and even the USA.

With over 150 entries, the festival will be one of the biggest ever. Commissioned choreographers include Boyzie Cekwana, Christopher Kindo, Robyn Orlin, Lean Coetzer, Bevan Cullinan and Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, with Timothy le Roux and Sbonakaliso Ndaba as the recipients of the Young Choreographers Grants presenting new works.

Other featured South African choreographers are Jeannette Ginslov, Gladys Agulhas, Tracey Human, Moeketsi Koena, PJ Sabbagha, Sello Pesa and Martin Schonberg. There is also a strong contingent from Cape Town with Alfred Hinkel, Geli Schubert and Samantha Pienaar bringing works.

The festival opens in grand style on February 20 at The Nelson Mandela Theatre at the Civic Theatre with world-renowned dance company Nederlands Dans Theater 3 in a programme of three works. NDT3 will feature South African David Krugel with Sabine Kupferberg, Christian Fallanga, Gioconda Barbuto and Egon Madsen.

The international component also features Salia Ni Seydou from Burkina Faso, assisted by the French Institute; Alias Compagnie from Switzerland who will be hosted by Pro Helvetia; Dean Moss from The Kitchen in New York; Robert Hylton from Britain, hosted by the British Council and Tumbuka Dance Company from Zimbabwe.
