FNB VITA DANCE UMBRELLA 2002 (article first published : 2001-10-21)

The FNB Vita Dance Umbrella will take place at The Wits Theatre and The Dance Factory, Johannesburg, from February 20 to March 16, 2002. This 14th annual platform for new contemporary choreography and dance will be one of the biggest ever as the festival has expanded to include international companies.

The Main programmes will feature mostly commissioned and/or invited choreographers as well as major artists from London, France, and the USA. The New Moves Programmes will host works from up and coming choreographers and youth and community-based groups will feature on the Stepping Stones Programmes.

The FNB Vita Dance Umbrella festival annually selects a number of choreographers who are commissioned to produce a work. This is with the assistance of funding from organisations such as Business Arts South Africa and is in addition to the annual Young Choreographers Grant. This incentive was introduced as a further encouragement for South African choreographers to work continuously. The choreographers who have been commissioned are a selection of the very experienced and established artists to the younger choreographer as well as artists who work on community dance projects.

Among the commissioned choreographers is Durbanís Boyzie Cekwana from the Floating Outfit Project who will work alongside Lean Coetzer from the TOM Dance Company in Pretoria; Christopher Kindo from Cape Town and Gregory Maqoma, Robyn Orlin and Shannel Winlock from Johannesburg.

Sbonakaliso Ndaba from Durban is a co-recipient of the annual FNB Vita Young Choreographers Grants with Johannesburg-based Timothy le Roux.

The international component of the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella 2002 will include NDT 3 who are coming with the assistance of the Netherlands Consul and Pim Broere; Salia Ni Seydou from Burkina Faso, assisted by the French Institute and Alias Compagnie who will be hosted by Pro Helvetia.

FNB Vitaís Georgina Thompson recently received the ACT Award for Administrator of the Year for her running of the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella.

Entry forms can be obtained by calling Georgina, Samantha or Tammy on (011) 442-8435 or e-mail: fnbvita@mweb.co.za
