BEWITCHED, BOTHERED & BEWILDERED! (article first published : 2001-10-5)

What happens when you take five funky choreographers, five different contemporary dance companies and throw them into one space? Some get bothered, others bewildered but most of all, audiences can be sure of some cutting-edge dance work that is sure to bewitch and woo dance lovers.

For the first time ever in South Africa, five independent Durban dance companies and choreographers are going to share dancers and space and work towards the creation of a full length dance work that probes, with both cynicism and laughter, the human condition surrounding our experiences of love.

Each choreographer will work off love poetry - ranging from works by Alice Walker, William Shakespeare, Jeannette Winterson, John Donne, Zakes Mda and Zinzi Mandela and others – to journey into the working of the human heart.

All five choreographers have clear and unique dance voices and will find personal ways to “speak” with the body about those issues that make up emerging South Africans. Facilitated by Mark Hawkins, Artistic Director of Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered will call forth some of the most innovative young choreographers in South Africa.

The season will incorporate the African post-modern voice of Boyzie Cekwana (Floating Outfit Project) and the African contemporary voice of Sifiso Kweyama (Phenduka Dance Theatre) and the neo-classical lyrical voice of David Gouldie (Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company). Added to this vibrant mix is the Southern African feminist voice of Lliane Loots (Flatfoot Dance Company) and the post everything de-construction fusion dance voice of Jay Pather (Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre).

This season of contemporary dance work is an experiment in meeting points. Not only for the different dancers and choreographers but for the audience to experience the politics and poetry of the moving body in an up close and personal venue.

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered runs at the St Mary's Church Hall (next to Bean Bag Bohemia) in Windermere Road). Performances run on October 17, 18 and 19 and again from October 24 to 26 at 19h30. Tickets R30 at the door. Wednesday night audiences can enjoy a free cocktail from BBB! Concession tickets at R20 for students and pensioners on Thursdays only. Contact Peter Taylor on (031) 209-0142.

The season has been made possible by Production Projects, XPR and Business and Arts South Africa.
