NATYA MALA (article first published : 2001-09-16)

One of Durban’s most spectacular dance events, Natya Mala, takes place at the magnificent new Kendra Auditorium in October.

Natya Mala – meaning a garland of dances is a kaleidoscope of various dancers from the four main Indian linguistic groups – Hindi, Tamil, Gujerati and Telugu. Featuring over 200 top quality dancers, Natya Mala 2001 offers the finest folk dances from such well-known institutions as Hillside Andhra Sabha, Kantharubuy's Dance School, Nateshwar Dance Company, Kumari Ambigay’s Dance Academy, Vadhini Dance Company and many more.

Durban Arts Association is a major sponsor and Dr T P Naidoo, director of the Indian Academy of SA, says that there are plans to expand next year’s Natya Mala for an open-air presentation which will feature dancers from India and Pakistan.

Natya Mala 2001 promises to be one of the most ambitious, colourful and disciplined dance productions seen in KZN for a long time. The performance will take place at the Kendra Auditorium in Sydenham Road on October 7 at 14h30.

Tickets available from September 15 2001 at the following outlets: Indian Academy of SA at 1 Oribi Circle, Mobeni Heights on (031) 400-2725; Atlas Printers at 83 Pine Street, Durban on (031) 332-7628 or Little India Restaurant at 155 Musgrave Road, Durban on (031) 201-1121/40.
