BEWITCHED, BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED (article first published : 2001-08-25)

A collaborative project bringing together dancers and choreographers from four Durban-based dance companies: Flatfoot Dance Company, Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre and Phenduka Dance Company. Choreographers Lliane Loots, Jay Pather, David Gouldie, Siphiso Kweyama and Sbo Ndaba will each work with dancers from the various companies to create new solo, duo or trio works. This will be the first time that this kind of project will take place with all the companies being truly integrated - all the works will be woven together into one large dance “tapestry”.

Poetry, dialogue, audio-visuals and photography will be incorporated into the performance making this an explosive multi-media dance experience. The season will also be making use of a new space never before been used by dance - this space is attached to Bean Bag Bohemia - a local restaurant which has a clientele of artists and performers as well as a diverse culturally mixed young crowd of people - many of whom have never been to theatre before. This is therefore an important project for Durban in terms of creating a new, young dance audience.

The objective of this collaborative venture is to empower the various companies by pooling resources and combining creative inputs. Durban audiences need to embrace the exhilarating, eclectic dance forms being born and fused in Durban and project will be an exhilarating launch pad for the choreographers to create new & cutting edge contemporary dance performance works.
