JOMBA! (article first published : 2001-08-24)

The JOMBA! 2001 Contemporary Dance Experience presented by The Centre For Creative Arts (University Of Natal - Durban) in association with FNB VITA opened on August 23 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. (See review on these pages shortly). The daily programme is as follows (all evening shows at 19h00):

August 24 (Friday): Southern Comfort from Vuyani Dance Theatre Project with choreography by Gregory Maqoma; The Sound That Comes Back To You From The World from Phenduka Dance Theatre, choreography by Sifiso Kweyama, and Barena choreographed and performed by Vincent Mantsoe. Also featured will be High Art from Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre with choreography by Jay Pather and Burden Of Proof from Phenduka Dance Theatre with choreography by Sbonakaliso Ndaba.

August 25: Saturday matinee at 14h30 - a special programme of solo works: Phokwane choreographed and performed by Vincent Mantsoe; The Sound That Comes Back To You From The World (Phenduka);Moving Cities (Vuyani) choreographed by Ami Shulman; Motswa Hole choreographed and performed by Vincent Mantsoe. Evening performance at 19h00: Southern Comfort (Vuyani); The Sound That Comes Back To You From The World (Phenduka); Barena (Vincent Mantsoe); High Art (Siwela Sonke), and Burden of Proof (Phenduka).

August 26 (Sunday) at 11h00 and August 27 (Monday) at 18h00 at the NSA Galleries: Everyday choreographed and performed by ValÚrie Burger (France) and Sello Pesa (South Africa). Monday at 19h00 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: JOMBA! Fringe Performance.

August 28 and 29 (Tuesday and Wednesday) 19h00: Daddy, I've Seen This Piece Six Times and I Still Don't Know Why They Are Hurting Each Other created and choreographed by Robyn Orlin.

August 30: 18h00 at NSA Galleries - FNB Vita Dance Awards. Special performance by Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre and Phenduka Dance Theatre.

August 31 (Friday) at 19h00: The Exploded Man from the Wilda Dance Company (Denmark) with choreography by Tim Feldmann.

September 1 (Saturday) Matinee at 14h30: Tri from Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company with choreography by David Gouldie; Phokwane(Vincent Mantsoe; A Quartet Between Silence And Sorrow from Flatfoot Dance Company with choreography by Lliane Loots, and ě from Wilda Dance Company (Denmark) with choreography Tim Feldmann. JOMBA! Talks Dance at 16h00: Gather after the matinee in the Theatre Coffee Bar for an informal discussion on the nature of choreography with special guests Vincent Mantsoe (South Africa) And Tim Feldmann (Denmark).

September 1 (Saturday) at 19h00 Tri (FFFDC); Motswa Hole (Vincent Mantsoe); A Quartet Between Silence And Sorrow (Flatfoot) and ě (Wilda).

September 2 (Sunday) 19h00: FNB Vita New Moves works choreographed by Ntombi Gasa (Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre); Deidre Atkins (Flatfoot Dance Company); Hlengiwe Lushaba (Technikon Natal); Mzokuthula Gasa (Siwela Sonke); Siyanda Duma (Technikon Natal)
