PRAGUE DANCE FESTIVAL 2002 (article first published : 2001-08-18)

The Prague Dance Festival 2002 will take place in various theatres of the New Czech Republic from April 25 to May 1 in Prague. This sixth edition of the international festival competition incorporates ballet, contemporary, modern, hip-hop, Latin, swing, folk, tap, schools and dance-theatrical educational Institutes.

The festival organisers have over ten years of group and educational events experience. Companies can be assured that they will not risk the performing integrity of their group. The festival expects to attract in the region of 1,600 dancers from 78 dance groups in 45 countries across five continents.

Next year’s special event will be the ballet Sinfonietta with choreography by Jiri Kylian, acclaimed Netherlands Dance Theatre choreographer. Tickets will be available free of charge to every dance participant to the Prague Festival 2002.

The opening ceremony on April 27 will be held in the Auto Skoda museum, considered one of the most beautiful modern theatres in Europe: a crystal and steel pyramid which overhangs the technological and futuristic theatre. The National Theatre Ballet of Prague will perform a work dedicated to the world of car production taken from the popular ballet Isadora Duncan.

The Award Career Prize will also be awarded that evening to an outstanding figure in international dance. Recent winners are Vlastimil Harapes, art director of the Prague National Theatre Ballet; Jiry Kylian, Jurij Grigorovich, director of the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, and JuriMadame Nathalia Besmertova the famous Raymonda, “primaballerina” of the Bolshoi.

Participation fee is US$449 for each dancer and chaperone participant. Accommodation will be in two-star hotels or University College residence situated 15 or so minutes away from the festival venues.
