a portion of time between two points (article first published : 2001-07-7)

Tracey Human is this yearís winner of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance. With The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative, she presented a portion of time between two points on the main festival of the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

The production comprises two works: The Madwomanís Underclothes and Sometimes it helps to have the right accessories featuring six dancers Gladys Agulhas, Shanell Winlock, Deirdre Wood, Timothy le Roux (who worked in Durban for a while with the Playhouse Dance Company), Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, PJ Sabbagha and Vusi Shabalala.

Inspired by the extraordinary woman who disguised herself as a man to eventually become Pope Joan, The Madwomanís Underclothes is visually beautiful, with set design by Jacqueline Van Meygaarden. An early image of a vast red cloak sweeping across the stage makes a major movement statement in itself. The choreography is beautiful but not innovative although there are lighthearted moments.

Possibly the piece was used to offset the quirkiness of the second for Sometimes it helps to have the right accessories was a passionate statement to the freedom of the soul. Here we see the dancers given wide rein in terms of choreography and set designer Sarah Roberts can always be relied on to extract the maximum amount of humour from any situation!

The work makes extensive use of the audiovisual format with the dancers acting out a scenario of looking for the perfect mate. Phosho Lebese provides occasional drum interludes.

Shoes play a major role in this piece. Gliding around in a glorious spangle-studded white lace ballgown, a dancer is obsessed with shoes. This is despite the fact that under her beautiful gown, she is wearing ungainly sheepskin slippers! Delicious send-ups of Swan Lake extracts as well as The Dying Swan brought gales of laughter from the audience. Obviously comedy is Tracey Humanís forte and one which she should develop. Itís a gift not given to all.

Declan Randallís lighting design is effective and dramatic, particularly in The Madwomanís Underclothes.
