FISH DISH (article first published : 2001-05-23)

Following their huge hit Chasing Tales, Durban's Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company is currently presenting an all-new fun education programme to delight junior and senior primary school learners. The programme has been underway since March this year and Fish Dish has been performed at schools in Durban as well as farther afield in KZN as far as Port Edward, Harding and Mtubatuba.

The idea is to introduce young people to theatre, and especially to dance, and at the same time tackle the topical social issues of litter and care for the environment. Fish Dish, with voice-over narration by Caroline Smart, is visually stunning, humorous and fun. It is also spunky and clear in its message.

“The response from schools has been fantastic and the response from the learners even better,” says Peter Taylor, FFFDC’s administrator. “The story begins on land but then moves to the sea before returning to land. We felt that as we are an ocean city we should do something which included the sea, and the fish and animals that live in it, and address the problem of litter which also affects this part of our environment.”

Conservation themes and various morals have been interwoven into the story to create a magical and colourful adventure. The show offers various dance styles with bright, imaginative costumes, puppets and props. Learners are given the unique opportunity to meet the dancers after the performances in a "question and answer" session.

Fish Dish is available for performances at schools on any day and at any time from Mondays to Fridays. More details or performance bookings from FFFDC on (031) 209-0142. The programme is a continuing one and bookings are taken on an on-going basis.
