BOLSHOI BOOKINGS (article first published : 2001-05-15)

This year the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet celebrates its 225th anniversary season which includes a South African tour. Audiences at Londonís Drury Lane Theatre will be watching the same programme as South Africans just a month before their tour to Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg. They company will appear in the Playhouse Opera on July 22, 24 and 25 to present a breathtaking new Gala Concert programme to enthrall ballet fans.

In recent years the Bolshoi Ballet has made world-touring a priority and has performed in South Africa several times. Last year, the company again astounded South African fans with their impeccable technique and standards of dance.

The first half of the Gala Concert features the full one-act ballet Chopiniana, which is better known outside Russia as Les Sylphides. This beautiful ballet was first performed in 1908 and is choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to music by Frederic Chopin. Today this ballet is in the repertoire of all the major ballet companies throughout the world and has been danced by many legendary dancers such as Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina and Vaslav Nijinsky.

The second half of the evening consists of extracts from a number of internationally recognised works including: the Russian Dance from Swan Lake, the pas de deux from Le Corsaire, the pas de deux from La Sylphide, the Dying Swan, and the waltz finale from The Nutcracker.

The Bolshoi Ballet is once again brought to South Africa by Edouard Miasnikov, who opened his own artistic agency in 1992 to widen the cultural exchange between Russia and South Africa.

Tickets R350, R250 and R150 at TicketWeb. Early booking is advised. Credit card booking on (031) 369-9444.
