IMBUMBA 2001 (article first published : 2001-01-31)

The exciting line-up for Imbumba 2001, KZN Dance Link's annual concert, reads like the "who's who" in dance in KZN. Taking place on February 3 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at 19h00, the production offers a truly representative gathering of dance performance.

Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company has joined the ranks with a new work by David Gouldie, Gaudete Too, an extension of a work first created for FFFDC's Dance Force season at the Sneddon in April last year when its haunting, sacred beauty and clean geometric design was well-received by an enthusiastic audience. This uplifting new section also uses music by Mediaeval Baebes and features dancers Mary-Ann de Wet, Nicole McCreedy, Cheryl Burger, Louise Fraquet and Vusi Thabethe.

Uyaba Dance Company will perform a work choreographed by director Thokozani Makhoba. Thokozani will be remembered for his splendid direction of Ungcutha, which performed at the Playhouse in 1999. He is also due to perform in Umabatha at The Globe Theatre in London later this year.

Jay Pather, well-known choreographer and artistic director of Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre, promises a surprise new work by the company!

Others in the kaleidoscopic programme are the Surialanga Dance Company, Yogambal and Pregalath Institute of Music and Dance, Kala-darshan, Cato Manor Technical College, Shwibeka Dance Ensemble and the Hlanganani Traditional Orchestra. Also appearing will be the Celtic Dance Company, Minette De Klerk Dance Academy, Mary Ann Salvage School of Ballet and the Nateshwar Dance Academy as well as Ballroom and Latin American dancers. Adding further variety will be the After Hours Dance Company, Ezangasekhaya, and the children from God's Golden Acre: Khayelihle.

Tickets R25 (R15 people under 16) available from the door at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre or book through Peter Taylor on (031) 209-0142 or Lynn Maree on (031) 206-1696.
