IMBUMBA 2001 (article first published : 2001-01-21)

KZN Dance Link, the umbrella body representing dance in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, will celebrate its second birthday with Imbumba 2001 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on February 3 at 19h00.

Featuring top KZN dance talent, Imbumba 2001 offers something for everyone, celebrating the rich diversity of dance forms practised in KZN including: Bharatha Natyam, ballroom dancing, ballet and Irish dancing as well as traditional and contemporary African dance. Taking part will be the Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre; Surialanga Dance Company; After Hours Dance Company; Eric Shabalala's Shwibeka Dance Company; the Celtic Dance Company; Hlanganani Dance Company and the Nateshwar Dance Academy.

"It is always exciting to see such an array of quality dance on one stage," says KZN Dance Link chairperson, Lynn Maree. "This evening provides a wonderful showcase of the dance talent that exists in this province."

The occasion will also be used to present young dancers from God's Golden Acre: Khayelihle at Cato Ridge who are part of a rural outreach project for children affected by HIV and Aids. They have been taught by KZN Dance Link members on KZN Dance Link's HIV/Aids Project - a joint effort with McCord Hospital's Sinekathemba. Weekly classes in every imaginable dance genre, including creative work, have resulted in two dance works: one from Surialanga Dance Company, and the other taught by Caesar Mkhize. Both these pieces will be performed at Imbumba 2001.

Tickets R25 (R15 people under 16) at the door or booked in advance by phoning Peter Taylor on (031) 209-0142 or Lynn Maree on (031) 206-1696.
