ROMEO AND JULIET (article first published : 2000-12-4)

Normally associated with their impressive and ground-breaking contemporary dance work, Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company have gone classical for the festive season. In association with The Playhouse Company, they present their highly acclaimed and beautifully produced version of the much-loved classic Romeo and Juliet in the Playhouse Drama Theatre as part of the complexís festive season programme.

The show, which has toured the country to excellent reviews, features exciting updates and stunning dance told through a mix of classical and contemporary dance choreographed to Prokofievís evocative score by artistic director Mark Hawkins and resident choreographer David Gouldie.

The production, directed by Robert Whitehead and designed by Sarah Roberts, fuses a variety of dance styles and theatrical designs to create a timeless piece of dance theatre which promises to inspire and bewitch.

Award-winning Durban fashion designers Colleen Eitzen and Amanda Laird-Cherry of the Durban Designer Emporium have created the costume designs for the Capulets and Montagues respectively. Lighting designs is by Michael Broderick and fight sequences are staged by Donald Jolley. Other sponsors who have made the production possible are the National Arts Council, Business and Arts South Africa and Production Projects.
