CISNE NEGRO (article first published : 2000-09-2)

Cisne Negro Dance Company in association with the Playhouse Company presents Cisne Negro direct from Brazil in the Playhouse Drama from September 13 to 17. Described by Jack Anderson of The New York Times as "a high-powered Brazilian contemporary dance troupe" who "kick up their heels at tradition", Cisne Negro is set to take local dance lovers by storm!

Cisne Negro is associated with originality and tradition - always trying to create new audiences, and searching for new people eager to appreciate innovation and beauty. Identified with its home city - São Paulo, one of the world's capitals - it is fertile, interesting and represents a mix of race and culture.

The company was formed when artistic director Hilda Bittencourt chose students from her already famous ballet school, The Cisne Negro Ballet Studio, and added students from the São Paulo Physical Education University. The combination of these diverse backgrounds has provided the ensemble with its fundamental characteristic: spontaneous and virile dance marked by a highly technical and artistic character.

The 23-year old company has always worked with innovative and young choreographers such as Patrick Delcroix (France), Mark Baldwin (England), Vasco Wellencamp (Portugal), Gigi Caciuleanu (Romania), Janet Smith (England), Ana Mondini (Brazil), Luis Arrieta (Argentina), Tindaro Silvano (Brazil) and Mário Nascimento (Brazil).

Cisne Negro has performed in Brazil's major cities, as well as in England, America, Canada, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina and Germany. The group has set new standards on the Brazilian dance scene, with works reflecting passion and professionalism. Visit www.cisnenegro.art.br
