FNB VITA DANCE WINNERS (article first published : 2000-08-27)

This evening, the winners of the annual FNB Vita Awards for Contemporary Choreography and Dance 1999/2000 for Durban were announced after the performance of the FNB Vita New Moves Programme which was part of the Jomba Contemporary Dance Experience.

Winners in the category Most Promising Performance by a Dancer were Musa Mbili (Not a Politician) for the male award while the female award was shared by Deidre Atkins (And the Moon Stopped) and Cheryl Burger (when the shadows of your past have finally faded).

Best Performance by a Male Dancer was won by Quinton Ribbonaar (A Commonwealth of Dance). The Best Performance award for a female dancer went to Nicole McCreedy (when the shadows of your past have finally faded).

Jay Pather took the Best Choreographer award for A South African Siddhartha.

A special FNB Vita Award was presented to Boyzie Cekwana for Rona. his impressive work that premiered in Cape Town at the 1998 FNB Vita Dance Indaba. From there it went to the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg and it won the African and Indian Ocean Choreographic Competition in Madagascar in November last year. Since then Boyzie Cekwana has toured Rona to several festivals in Europe and Africa. The FNB Vita Contemporary Choreography and Dance judges in Durban gave him the special award in recognition of his ongoing development as both a choreographer and artist based in Durban.
