SHOBANA JEYASINGH AUDITIONS (article first published : 2000-08-19)

One of the Britain's leading contemporary dance companies, the London-based Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, will hold auditions in Durban on August 26 at the Playhouse Company in Dance Rehearsal Studio 503.

Artistic director Shobana Jeyasingh has been heralded as one of Britain's "great and gifted dancemakers" (London Evening Standard). She creates unique dance languages that express her own personal mixing of British and Indian identity using the Indian classical form of Bharata Natyam as a starting point for her exploration.

The company, which is funded by the Arts Council of England and supported by The British Council, seeks professional dancers, preferably with a strong Bharata Natyam technique with at least three to four years training. They should also have an interest in related disciplines such as sports, martial arts and yoga. Applicants should be interested in new, imaginative and athletic uses of the body and be used to working in a professional context. All dancers must be at least 18 years of age and must be committed to spending up to eight months of the year in the United Kingdom.

This is an excellent opportunity for young, energetic South Africans to be part of the innovative developments in Indian dance and to travel abroad. The Company offers a competitive salary and payment of air travel to the UK. It will also arrange appropriate accommodation for dancers.

Dancers wishing to audition should contact Amanda Jones at the British Council on (031) 305-7356 (office hours) to register by August 18. Full CV's and a photograph must be brought to the audition.
