DANCE LINK NEWS (article first published : 1999-05-16)

The latest meeting of the KZN DanceLink in May produced interesting reports from members. The Surialanga dance group has been invited to dance at the Inauguration Gala of the President on June 16 in Pretoria and later at the Smithsonian Institute in the United States. The Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company artist director Mark Hawkins will be the stage director for the President’s inauguration. Other FFFDC news is that the company left today (May 16) for a two-week tour of Taiwan – taking Midsummer Night’s Dream and I Never Sang for my Mother. The FFFDC opens with Coppelia at the Playhouse on June 19 for a two-week season before the company leaves for Grahamstown.

Loshani Naidu is preparing a paper for a conference in Moscow in October. The theme is The Voice of the Artist: Synthesis in Contemporary Choreography and Caryl Cusens reported that the annual ballroom and Latin American festival Shall We Dance is to be held in the Playhouse Opera in June with Ian von Memerty as compere.

The KZN Dance Company has been formed by the merging, for performance, of the KZN Dance Theatre and the Manormani Govender Dance Academy. They performed for the Cancer Association in March and will go to Grahamstown in July with the Playhouse Transnet Truck. KZN Dance Theatre and the Nateshwar Dance Academy are planning a conference on Indian Dance for September 17 to 19 with the opening performance taking place at the Playhouse Opera and the academic aspects based at the University of Durban-Westville. The Indian Consulate will sponsor two dancers from Indian to perform and present papers. It is also hoped to bring speakers from other parts of the world to speak on the establishment of Indian dance among non-Indian societies.

Good to hear that Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre is still going strong. Under the auspices of the Playhouse it is currently touring high schools and appearing in Omnibus schools presentation in the Playhouse Opera.

Eric Shabalala is freelancing teaching African contemporary dance and pantsula in Kloof with Di Drake and in Durban North with Minette de Klerk. He has received two offers – one to dance in Hong Kong for three months or to appear in a dance/drama in France for five months.

Linda Vargas recently returned from Spain where she and 16 members of her company attended a Flamenco conference where they discussed key developments in flamenco throughout the world and watched over 40 superb performances by flamenco companies. In September, Linda Vargas takes ,i>Camino Flamenco to Johannesburg to the Agfa theatre on the Square for a two-week run. With colleagues, she is also working on a new flamenco syllabus for South African studies.
