DON QUIXOTE (article first published : 2000-07-6)

The classical ballet Don Quixote replaces The Merry Widow at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival's main programme. Danced by the Cape Town City Ballet and Artscape, it was a last minute replacement when Merry Widow was unable to be performed due to the closure of the State Theatre.

Based on the hero of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, driven by his vision of Dulcinea with his mind totally filled by tales of chivalry and valour, sets out on his wild adventures with his trusty squire, Sancho Panza, in tow. The veteran character dancer John Simons will once again be seen on stage in one of his most memorable roles, that of Don Quixote.

Tracy Li (formerly with the Napac Dance Company) and Elouise Sauer will dance Kitri. Johnny Bovang and Daniel Rajna will alternate as Basilio. With choreography by Veronica Paeper, designs by Peter Cazalet and lighting design by John T Baker, this production will transport the audience to the charm of 17th century Spain. The music for this ballet, composed by Ludwig Minkus, arranged and orchestrated by Allan Stephenson will be performed by the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra Pretoria (NAPOP), conducted by Stephenson.

The scheduled dates for NAPOP's symphony and the Proms concerts remain unaltered, however there will be one change to the symphony programme: Symphony No 7 in A major by Beethoven will be played in place of Sibelius's Symphony no.2 in D major Op.43, making it an all-Beethoven line-up.

All Merry Widow tickets for performances on July 6 at 19h00 and July 8 at 11h00 will automatically be replaced with tickets for Don Quixote at the same performance times or may be refunded at any Computicket outlet.
