GRAHAMSTOWN DANCE (article first published : 2000-06-9)

International and local dancers create a varied programme of visual beauty at the 26th Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown to be held from June 30 to July 8.

From France, Ballet Atlantique performs The Dance of the Time (La Dans du temps). Devised at the turn of the new millennium, it is a remarkable collaboration between of one of France's leading contemporary choreographers, Régine Chopinot, nature artist Andy Goldsworthy and Vietnamese composer Tôn-Thât Tiêt. Walking, running, jumping, falling, trances and immobility are used to form a generous, primal dance that is inspired by the symbolic passage of perceptual time.

Dance Divine, presented by Priyadarshini Govind and Company from India, explores the poetry of one of the country's oldest dance forms, Bharata Natyam. Nurtured in the temples and courts of the southern regions, for many years the art was handed down as a living tradition from generation to generation. Bharata Natyam's blend of the abstract and the emotional is derived from its fusion of two prime elements: nritta, pure dance and nritya, expressive dance.

One of South Africa's most acclaimed choreographers, Robyn Orlin, directs the performance art piece daddy, i've seen this piece six times before and i still don't know why they're hurting each other. This work investigates the politics of theatre in terms of space, dance performance, empowerment and ownership and asks the question: "Whose aesthetics belong where?" Orlin explains that "It's a bout love - whatever that is - and it's about a group of people who just can't get a show together no matter how hard they try."

The State Theatre Ballet Company performs The Merry Widow - the ultimate theatrical experience for all who want to be transported away from the stress of everyday life to a world of love lost and won, of breathtaking ballrooms, Parisian villas and the French capital's legendary haunt of the rich and famous, Maxim's. The production combines dance by acclaimed British choreographer Ronald Hynd with Desmond Heeley's beautiful scenery and costumes and the unforgettable music of Franz Lehàr.

The Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company from KZN stages a double bill that includes the much loved A Midsummer Night's Dream, choreographed by Mark Hawkins and David Gouldie's Borrowed Words. Described after its debut performance as having vivacious energy and tongue-in-cheek humour, Hawkins' A Midsummer Night's Dream is a South African adventure of pure dance magic. This production has performed to critical acclaim in Taiwan and Durban. Borrowed Words tells of the journey of a young man through his life and the impact of political and personal influences. In examining how languages 'borrow' different words and expressions from each other, the piece comments on the ever-changing morals and attitudes that are derived from the new way in which people communicate.

New Directions includes works created by four of our country's new wave of innovative choreographers. Moeketsi Koena, Mandla Mcuna, Gregory Maqoma and Sello Pesa unite to produce a programme that balances their South African roots with their internationally-learned technical skill.
