SHALL WE DANCE? (article first published : 2000-05-29)

The much-loved Shall We Dance? Ballroom and Latin American showcase presented by NBS with the South African Dance Teachers' Association has been going for ten years now and this year’s season takes place on June 3 and 4 at the Playhouse Opera.

Dynamic performers Bronwen Forbay and Duncan Royce will host the show which features a variety of ballroom, Latin-American and classical Indian dance fusion. Guest artists will be a dance formation team from Zimbabwe as well as South African representatives to the World Ten Dance in Paris this year, professional champions Grant Esterhuizen and Anneline Oliver.

Also appearing will be Durban professional ballroom couple Jaya and Cookie Chengelroyan and Latin American award-winners Neville and Lenore Matjie as well as Mtseng Ndimande, Ryan Yunnie and Janelle Beyers with their formation team and the Afterhours Theatre Company Dancers. Funny man Mark Wilson promises his usual hilarious antics and irreverent send-ups. Stephen Pieterse's Hip Hop dancers, the Manormani Dance Academy and the Lisa Linton's Celtic dancers join forces in a kaleidoscope of dance styles.

The programme includes all time favourites such as O Sole Mio, Summer Knows (from Summer of '42), Carousel, I've Got Rhythm, upbeat hits such as Mucho Mambo, I Need to Know and contemporary classics such as the theme from Titanic, Bohemian Rhapsody and Time to say Goodbye. There's Viennese waltzing, elegant quick-stepping, steamy Tango-ing and Latin American hip swaying and footwork.

Performances take place on June 3 at 14h30 and 19h30 and on June 4 at 18h00, with profits from the last performance going to Highway Hospice. Booking at TicketWeb. For internet bookings at www.ticketweb.co.za or for credit card bookings phone 0861 400 500 or telephone Playhouse Dial-A-Seat on (031) 369-9444. Tickets also available from the Playhouse box-office during usual office hours.
