TRADITIONAL SONG AND DANCE (article first published : 2000-05-8)

The School of Music at the University of Natal continues its regular series of free lunch-hour concerts with a programme by the UND African music and dance studentsí performing groups on Wednesday (May 10) in Howard College Theatre at 12h15. These include the NU African Music Ensemble; Izinyoni Ezindizayo; Amaqhikiza and Ikusasa Lethu.

For the year 2000, the African Music Project has launched an Arts on Tour programme in which there are a number of new performing ensembles. Two of the groups Amaqhikiza and Ikusasa Lethu will represent South Africa at the World Exposition in Hanover, Germany, entitled Hanover Expo 2000. In October and November, a gumboot team comprising UND students and community artists will do a three-week performance and workshop tour in various cities surrounding Goteborg in Sweden.

The lunch-hour concert offers a preview of some of this repertoire which consists of traditional songs and dances from various ethnicities in South Africa - including Zulu, Tswana, Pondo and Venda. A full concert in traditional dress will be staged on May 26 at Howard College Theatre at 19h00. Tickets for this event at R20 can be booked through the African Music Project on (031) 26-1045 or email: opondop@mtb.und.ac.za.
