THE ADAMS BROTHERS (article first published : 2000-05-7)

Warren Adams left his hometown Port Elizabeth as a 17 year old, the first recipient of the Ballet Rambert South African Scholarship which provides two years fully paid training at the prestigious ballet company in London. Since those early days, Warren Adams has risen rapidly to the rank of principal artist with Ballet Hispanica in New York.

Now an internationally-renowned dancer, Warren returned to South Africa recently to begin choreographing his new work World's Apart, specially commissioned by the award-winning Gauteng-based youth dance company Ballet Theatre Afrikan. Prior to this, Warren journeyed with the company to Grahamstown for the FNB Vita Dance Umdudo. Among the 19 members of Ballet Theatre Afrikan was Warren's younger brother, Christopher Adams, who first saw the company perform their production of Cinderella in Port Elizabeth in 1998. Inspired by their dedication, focus and sense of fun, he left for Johannesburg and subsequently joined them last year.

Working together for the first time Warren said: " Being so far away, seeing each other for an average of two weeks a year, just spending time together is fun. Inside the studio it's strictly business, I treat him exactly the same as any other dancer in the studio. I think because we have such great respect for each other, this does not affect our relationship outside the studio. It is a wonderful experience to be working back in South Africa. I wish I could spend more time here. This is my second project, but my first with Ballet Theatre Afrikan. I am hoping this happens more often."

World's Apart will be premiered at Ballet Theatre Afrikan's season at the Roodepoort City Theatre on June 30 and July 1. More details from Paula Kelly on 083 267-3029, e mail: paulak1@global.co.za or visit http://www.artslink.co.za/bta
