KZN DANCE LINK NEWS (article first published : 2000-05-5)

The Durban-based dance organisation KZN Dance Link has finalised its plans for the year 2000/2001 and, through its most time-consuming and continuous HIV/Aids Project, is making its presence felt on the arts scene as well as in the field of public health.

A Saturday dance class is held for the children of God’s Golden Acre in Cato Ridge. Titled Give a child a home project, it reaches children who have been affected in some way by the HIV virus. A weekly dance class is conducted for the members of the HIV/Aids Support Group run by the social work department at McCord Hospital.

Started as a voluntary project by KZN Dance Link members, this year’s operation has since received funding from KZN Arts and Culture Council and McCord Hospital’s Cycle the World for Aids Fund as well as from private donations.

“We plan a “glossy” leaflet to publicise both the organisation itself and the work of our members,” says Lynn Maree, KZN Dance Link chairman. “In September we will hold a Dance in Education workshop for teachers of drama in KZN high schools. What makes us special is the range of dance expertise we bring to the planning and execution of this workshop.”

The launch production of KZN Dance Link at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in January this year was a major sell-out success and plans are in hand for the second production to be staged in January 2001 to showcase the dance skills of members.

The organisation has already been involved in the setting up of a Standards Generating Body for dance in South Africa. Membership of this body will soon be advertised for in the national press. More details from KZN Dance Link, PO Box 17058, Congella, Durban, 4013. Phone/fax (031) 206-1696
