BAXTER DANCE FESTIVAL (article first published : 2008-06-21)

The Baxter Theatre Centre’s fourth annual Baxter Dance Festival takes place from August 20 to 24, 2008.

Over the last three years, nearly 150 local choreographers have showcased their work in featuring close to 500 dancers from more than 140 studios, dance schools, projects and professional companies from all over the Western Cape, presenting a wide variety of dance styles and genres including contemporary, classical, African, modern and Spanish.

Previous winners of the commissioned work are former Durban dancer Ebrahim Medell (2005), Marlin Zoutman (2006), and last year’s collaboration between Yarisha Singh and Celeste Botha in a new contemporary work entitled Long Street described as an expression of people and place with a focus on the diversity, integration and cultural richness of Long Street - a Cape landmark.

Project Manager Nicolette Moses says: “The growth and support of the festival over the last few years has been fantastic. It has grown exponentially in terms of applications and interest shown by dance makers. It is exciting that in our fourth year the festival has already become a major event on the Mother City’s dance calendar. Thanks to the generous support of our donors Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Chiappini Charitable and Cultural Trust and HCI Foundation, we are able to continue this very important opportunity for the local dance community and the public.”

The Festival aims to provide emerging and established dance companies and choreographers with an opportunity to present their work, whilst striving to nurture and promote dance talent in the Western Cape. It is the perfect environment to experience and see work by established professionals, as well as exciting up-coming dance practitioners.

The Festival will take the form of a Main Programme running from August 20 to 23 at 19h30 and a Fringe Programme on August 24 at 12h00. The Baxter Theatre Centre will provide a comprehensive production package - which includes lighting, sound, technical assistance, publicity, box office facilities, printed programmes and pre-show rehearsal arrangements - making it a "no admin headaches" experience for participating dance groups and companies.

The Main Programme will feature work by established professional companies, as well as the newly commissioned work. This programme will be made up of various works of different lengths. Only one new dance work per choreographer may be entered.

The Fringe Programme will run during the day on June 24 and will include work by youth groups and dance schools, school groups, traditional African dance groups and by choreographers who request that their work run on this programme for practical or other reasons.

Running concurrently with the dance festival in the Baxter Sanlam Studio is Cinedans 2008, screening dance movies which include works by international choreographers, directors, dancers and dance companies. With the addition of the film festival, local audiences also get the chance to see internationally award-winning work. Screenings will take place daily at 18h00 with a matinee on August 24 at 14h00.
