TWISTED BONES (article first published : 2008-04-19)

The Playhouse Company is to present its latest New Stages production, Twisted Bones, in The Playhouse Loft for a short season from May 8 to 11. Durban choreographer Eric Shabalala has created this innovative new piece for the Durban-based contemporary dance company, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre.

Twisted Bones is a work about people being prepared to help each other in their situations in life. In so doing they realise that they have something in common with each other. We live by sharing our sorrows and pains with people close to us. Sometimes we cry in silence because we are scared of sharing our sadness. By speaking to one another we find relief,” explains Eric Shabalala.

A pure contemporary piece, Twisted Bones lasts one hour and 20 minutes. Eric Shabalala has created the piece for the Siwela dancers and they will perform it for the first time at The Playhouse. Interspersed with the dancing are multi-media images of traffic: cars; trains and people – as a symbol of the sadness, frustrations, pains and sorrows which burden us. When these emotions stay within us, it becomes like traffic in our bodies and our lives.

“The theme talks to me,” says Eric Shabalala. “Pain, sorrow and stress which we come across in everyday life stays with us and eventually makes us twist our bones. The problems like relationships breaking up and violence in our homes begin to live in our heads and they won’t go away – it affects our sleep, body and appetite. After a time, all this twists our bones.”

Twisted Bones includes guest artist Pravika Nandkishore, among others. Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre has garnered much acclaim and many awards for their productions over the years. The company is also involved in a series of community development projects including projects in Cato Crest, Claremont and on the South Coast in KwaMachi.

The Playhouse Company’s ongoing series of New Stages productions is designed to showcase cutting edge productions that reflect innovative creative work to be seen on the South African performing arts front.

Twisted Bones runs in The Playhouse Loft from May 8 to 11 with public performances on May 9 at 19h00, May 10 at 19h00 and May 11 at 15h00. Tickets R30 booked through Computicket on 083 915 8000 or The Playhouse Box Office on 031 369 9540/9596 during office hours.
