THE MERCHANTS OF BOLLYWOOD (article first published : 2008-02-2)

The all-singing, all-dancing Bollywood-type musical extravaganza The Merchants of Bollywood has already been hailed as a spectacular success by audiences and critics in Australia, Germany, Switzerland and the UK.

Presented by Big Concerts, 94.7 Highveld Stereo and East Coast Radio, the show will grace South African stages in May, with performances at the ICC Arena before moving to the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg on May 24 and 25.

The Merchants of Bollywood is a dynamic, vibrant and energetic spectacle of colour and culture, based on the real life story of the show’s choreographer. The story is a potent mixture of dreams and sacrifices, family rebellion and romance, and is set to some of the most memorable songs and music from Bollywood films.

Written and directed by Toby Gough, the show features music by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and is choreographed by leading film choreographer Vaibhavi bhavi Merchant. The Merchants of Bollywood is the first authentic musical from Bollywood city, and not only charts the captivating history of the world’s largest and most prolific film industry, but pays tribute to the dynasty of stars that have lit its way over generations.

Featuring a cast of 40 dancers, singers and actors direct from Film City Mumbai, The Merchants of Bollywood follows the story of Ayesha Merchant, her grandfather Shantilal, and the inevitable clash of generations and ambition. Both leading choreographers, their approach to film choreography could not be further apart, and Ayesha embarks on a journey to the heart of India to make peace with Shantilal, after their apparently irreparable feud. Tears are shed, old wounds are healed, and age-old conflict is reconciled, in a powerful journey to the sacred heart of dance.

The show promises an invigorating and extraordinary experience with a high energy fusion of folk, classical, modern, Western and Indian dance forms.

Performances take place on May 19 and 20 at the Indoor Arena, International Convention Centre. Book through Computicket. For more info on The Merchants of Bollywood visit www.merchantsofbollywood.com
