SWAN LAKE (article first published : 2007-12-23)

SABC 2 and The South African Ballet Theatre will broadcast of the world’s most popular ballet Swan Lake on December 30 at 20h00.

This broadcast of the recent season at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre features Principal Dancers Anya Carstens (Odette/Odile) and Christian Tátchev (Prince Siegfried) in the title roles. The production was produced by guest producer Beverley Bagg and features the entire SA Ballet Theatre company accompanied by The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Graham Scott. Tchaikovsky’s well-known score evokes the lyricism and beauty that is Swan Lake, while the costumes and sets place the ballet in its traditional lakeside and regal setting.

"We are delighted that SABC 2 had the foresight and vision to agree to be the first channel to record a full length SABT production for public broadcast. This season of SABT's Swan Lake, broke all previous SABT box office records and has been exquisitely and professionally filmed and will become, we are sure, a classic to be enjoyed by current and future ballet fans for many years to come."

This broadcast, on national television, is a milestone in the six-year history of The SA Ballet Theatre. Founded in 2001 by a handful of dancers, the SA Ballet Theatre has grown to employ 35 full-time dancers making it the country’s foremost ballet company.

Swan Lake was first performed by The SA Ballet Theatre as the inaugural production presented on the newly-opened Nelson Mandela Stage at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre in 2001. The 2007 version, with choreography after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, is in the tradition of the original Russian classic.

Patrons who attended the season are invited to relive the magic by tuning in to SABC 2 on December 30 at 20h00; those who missed it should take this rare opportunity to see the quality, glamour and escapism that has come to embody The SA Ballet Theatre.
