INDUMEZULU YOMDANSO 2007 (article first published : 2007-12-10)

After an intense yet fun year of training in contemporary dance and choreography, the young people of Cato Manor Vibe!!, a workshop programme in contemporary dance based in Cato Manor, will present their annual production Indumezulu Yomdanso over the coming long weekend.

Cato Manor Vibe!! is a project initiated by Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company and supported by The Royal Netherlands Embassy which has, for the past eight years, worked with young people from Cato Manor and beyond, training them in the techniques and disciplines of contemporary dance.

Indumezulu Yomdanso is the annual production presented each year showcasing the work that these young people have done throughout the year just past. This year the programme will begin with curtain-raisers performed by CMV!!’s junior trainees, the Baby Ballerinas; and by young people from sister outreach programmes co-ordinated by KZN DanceLink: Durban Children’s Home (Glenwood), God’s Golden Acre – Khayelihle (Cato Ridge) and St Philomena’s Children’s Home (Sherwood).

The featured work of this year’s programme is an exuberant and colourful performance piece, eCato Manor kuseKhaya, which traces the history of Cato Manor (Umkhumbane) from the time of the first inhabitants through to the present day. It documents the often turbulent history of the area which reflects the history of South Africa through a fusion of contemporary dance and the spoken word. This work is collaboratively choreographed by Thulile Bhengu, Super Cele, Musa Hlatshwayo, Mdu Mtshali and Jabu Siphika. The work is directed by Lliane Loots and designed by Clare Craighead.

Each day’s performance will be heralded by The Field Band Foundation BG Bison Buccaneers field band which will perform outside the venues prior to the performances. The PG Bison Buccaneers are overall winners of the national field band competition held recently in Johannesburg.

Indumezulu Yomdanso 2007 will conclude the 8th year of this youth dance training project and, unfortunately, signals the end of funding for this project. CMV!! is most grateful to The Royal Netherlands Embassy for having had faith in this project and for having funded it consistently over the past eight years. The future is now uncertain as to whether classes can continue in the new year and the search for funding from local sources continues. CMV!! has produced young people who are fine exponents of contemporary dance, people of whom Durban can be extremely proud, and has provided a positive outlet for these young people in which to spend their free time while gaining knowledge of the contemporary dance form.

CMV!! acknowledges and thanks Westridge High School for the use of their premises during the past year.

The first performance of Indumezulu Yomdanso will take place at Dorothy Nyembe Hall, Cato Crest Community Centre, on December 15 at 14h00, to be followed by a second performance at Wiggins Community Centre Hall on December 16 at 14h00. Admission to is free and all are welcome.
