SA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION (article first published : 2007-09-28)

As the closing date for entries draws near, the organisers of the inaugural South African International Ballet Competition are pleased to report the growing number of entrants from overseas, joining the already impressive list of South African candidates. The competition will be held from January 14 to 19, 2008, at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town, South Africa.

In addition to the local interest, applications have been received from Cuba, Brazil, Japan, Argentina and China. Additionally, a new judge has joined the illustrious panel, namely Hae Shik Kim, the President of the World Dance Alliance in Korea and Artistic Director of the Seoul International Dance Competition. Ms. Kim joins an impressive line-up of judges from South Africa and abroad: Capetonians Phyllis Spira and Denise Schultz as well as Septime Webre, the Artistic Director of Washington Ballet; the Australian master coach and ballet master Simon Dow; Virginia Johnson from New York who edits Pointe Magazine, and Mario Galizzi, a guest teacher and director from Brazil.

The South African International Ballet Competition provides an international showcase for local and foreign dancers. Like its counterparts at Varna in Bulgaria, Jackson in the US and the Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland, the competition will typically enable directors of various dance companies in South Africa and abroad to seek out new and exciting talent. The alumni of the aforementioned international competitions include Sylvie Guillem and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Entries close September 28. For further information visit www.saibc.co.za

Tickets are now available for the Finals on January 18 and the Gala performance on January 19, 2008, when all the winners will be announced. All performances will take place at Artscape and booking is through Computicket, 083 915 8000 or 021 421 7695.
