ZINDALA ZOMBILI (article first published : 2007-08-20)

Zindala Zombiliís legacy of scouting for fresh talent nationally brings it to KwaZulu-Natal with a competition taking place on August 26 at the BAT Centre. This initiative is designed to assist the local artists promote the cultural identity for all the indigenous peoples of South Africa. The 25 contesting groups will be judged according to the six African dance categories such as: Indlamu, Isishiyameni Sezintombi, Izishubo, Isishiyameni Sezinsizwa, Umzansi and Isigekle.

Ms Maureen Nhlebela is the chairperson of the Ezomdabu Cultural Organisation which locally oversees the arrangements for the contest. Having emerged from the very same traditional music/dance competition in the late eighties, she is a pro-active supporter of women in arts and culture. She has been in the professional arts industry since 1993 and has bested many stages performing with her recorded women-led group called Osenzeni.

The competition has stood the test of time like good wine, as today it is still called Zindala Zombili and it has grown into a television programme on SABC.

Application forms for the aspirant contestants are available at the BAT Centre.

Zindala Zombili takes place on August 26 from 09h00 to 17h00 in the Sipho Gumede Hall at the BAT Centre.

The entrance fee to members of the public will be a contribution of R10 at the door. The money will go towards preparing for the National Traditional Dance finals normally held during September. More information from Mr X Sithole on 031 332 0451.
