ATTACHMENTS (nos. 1-7) (article first published : 2007-07-21)

The acclaimed dance work Attachments (nos.1-7) recently wowed audience on the Fringe of the 2007 National Arts Festival.

The programme comprises a series of duets that explore the coming together of bodies, desires, fantasies, and territories. It uncovers the various negotiations in the stages of relationships. They are distilled pieces of physical lyricism that slip from comedy to heartbreak.

When we first: The electricity of the first encounter transports us from the familiar into the space of another. Blue Bathroom: The spark of the first meeting transforms into the playfulness and madness of discovering new love and shared spaces. Sleep Talk: In our most intimate space we are challenged by the fulfilment of and surrender to another. Take Out: What are we distracted from? What if (For my mother): The fantasy of a brief escape reveals the paradox of being together and alone. Lost in Away: How do we return, having lost where we were? From the outside in: Negotiating the pathway to what we had.

Segments of Attachments (nos.1-7) have appeared several times at the FNB Dance Umbrella, on the main festival in Grahamstown in 2005 followed by an appearance at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival in 2005. It was also seen at the recent Klein Karoo Nationale Kunstefees.

Numerous awards and nominations include Most Outstanding Male and Female Dancer in a Contemporary Style in the Gauteng MEC Contemporary Choreography and Dance Awards 2005 respectively for Craig Morris and Athena Mazarakis.

Attachments (nos.1-7) is created with funding from the National Arts Council and FNB Dance Umbrella by Gerard Bester, Athena Mazarakis and Craig Morris. Directed by Gerard Bester, it is performed by Athena Mazarakis and Craig Morris with lighting design by Declan Randall.

Attachments (nos.1-7) will have performances on August 8 and 9 at 19h30 at The Theatre - St Anne’s College in Hilton. Bookings on 033 343 3300.
