VØLVEN (article first published : 2007-07-20)

Vølven is a Danish production performed by the Danish youth theatre group Ragnarock from Humlebæk. It is a theatrical production of vocal and physical actions based on an introduction to culture and identity of young Danes - evoking the fantastical Denmark of mythology and the tangible Denmark of today.

In Nordic mythology, the Vølve is a female figure who possesses the gift of prophecy. She is able to invoke both gods and mere mortals and is endowed with the power of seeing into the future as well as backwards into the past. Legend has it that the Vølve's word was not merely heard but feared and highly respected. In old Nordic mythology the word Vølve means "staff-bearer".

Vølven was originally made in 1995 for Ragnarock's collaboration with aboriginal youth theatre groups in Australia. It is performed by 16 Danes and is instructed by Francis Pardeilhan and forms part of a cultural exchange project between Musikteatergruppen Ragnarock and Little Theatre / Cape Town University. It was initiated by the Danish Cultural Institute and is funded by the Danish Centre for Culture and Development, the Danish Amateur Theatre Cooperation and the municipality of Fredensborg.

Ragnarock is a Danish youth theatre group from the coastal city of Humlebæk, situated north of Copenhagen. The group was founded 32 years ago on the initiative of Joachim Clausen, who is still the group’s leader. Ragnarock comprises several individual groups, each one offering theatrical activities for people of all ages. Most of the members of this association are children and young people in their early teens.

Vølven will have one performance in the Hexagon Studio Theatre on August 3 at 13h00. Entrance is free and tickets will be available at the door.
