NCAYF DANCE (article first published : 2007-05-16)

The 2007 National Creative Arts Youth Festival is currently running at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre when thousands of KZN learners and young performing artists take to the stage, enjoying this much-appreciated platform to showcase their skills.

The festival was the brainchild of the late Professor Elizabeth Sneddon who conceived it as a celebration of the achievements and aspirations of the youth of South Africa.

The dance component of the festival kicks off on May 16 with Imbumba 2007 (see separate article) which is a showcase of new works created by award-winning and emerging choreographers to nurture young talent. The diverse programme offers everything from contemporary dance and classical Bharatha Natyam to tap dance and traditional Zulu performance.

Born to Dance is a showcase of dance dramas taking place on May 18 at 19h00.

There are two programmes on May 19. Dance for Joy! at 15h00 showcases the skills of the junior dancers from KZN studios and schools. This will be followed by a kaleidoscope of global dance in Rhythms of the World at 19h00.

The Dance Choreography Competition will be held at 10h00 on May 20.

The National Creative Arts Youth Festival in collaboration with the Durban Dance Foundation presents the Durban Dance Foundation Bursary Competition on May 24 from 13h45 to 18h00. The competitions offers the Nan Girdlestone Bursary; the DDF Junior Bursary; The Lurgan Junior Bursary, and the Faith de Villiers Bursary.

Love of Dance, another collaboration between NCAYF and DDF, will take place on May 26 at 15h00 and again at 19h00.

All dance programmes take place at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Tickets available at the door. More information on 031 201 9312.
