FUNK 2007 (article first published : 2007-05-9)

In its eighth year, the annual Funk combined schools programme of dance theatre is entertaining, interesting and diverse, and provides a memorable theatre experience for adults, primary and senior school learners alike.

Funk 2007 is presented by The Theatres St Anne's and Hilton College in association with Carter High, Epworth High, Felixton College, Howick High, Maritzburg College, Michaelhouse, Russell Girls High, St Charles College, St Johns DSG, St Nicholas, St Anne's College and The Wykeham Collegiate

Funk evolved as an idea to create a dance programme for schools with very specific aims.

Firstly to unite schools in working towards a common goal; secondly to give drama students and their teachers the opportunity to create and rehearse pieces of dance theatre for public performance; thirdly, and perhaps most importantly of all, to enable young people to see that movement, dance and dance theatre is accessible to them and not only in the hands of professional adult dance companies.

This year all participating schools were challenged to pursue a stronger educational process in the creation of their choreography, engaging with meaning in their work in the aims of injecting the programme with greater depth, choreographic diversity and artistic integrity.

The programme is directed by Lynn Chemaly with technical direction by David Muller and finale creation by Anton Immelman.

Funk 2007 runs in the Hilton College Theatre at19h30 on May 12, 14, 15 and 16. Tickets R35 booked through 033 383 0126.
