KWA-THANKS (article first published : 2007-03-25)

The Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre is the new name for Kwasuka Theatre in Greyville. Now run by a pro-active team (KwaTeam headed by the KwaPrefects!), the venue aims to offer a home for exciting and challenging new work by Durban theatre and film practitioners.

The new vision for the theatre has been achieved through the considerable energies and efforts of a number of people.

The ants, which have been a huge problem at Kwasuka, have gone to ant heaven! They have been professionally exterminated free of charge by Fred de Kock from Deco Projects – experts in roofing and floors; pest extermination, building, gutters and facia boards. This ant elimination would normally have cost in the region of R4,000.

The theatre has undergone a new face-lift and this is thanks to the Kwa-Project Renovation Volunteers. Genevieve Akal handled the overall coordination and Jacobus van Heerden headed the table-top artwork project which sees the foyer tables converted into works of art.

Libby Allen and Iain Robinson headed the renovation initiative with Danielle Perlman; Sean de Klerk; Kim Sanssoucie; Clinton Small; Karen Logan; Neil Coppen; Keri Miller; Shayna de Kock; Bryan Hiles; Clare Mortimer; Marc Kay; Adam Doré and Illa Thompson.

Special thanks are due to Jimmy, Themba, Simpiwe and Gerard from Themi Venturas Productions as well as Kwasuka regular audience members Tony Thoms and Lindi Drummond.

Caroline Diack of The Lamp and Lighting Shop provided the chandelier.

The Kwa-table Tops were produced by Andrew Verster (2 tables); Aidan Walsh; Marklyn Govender; Clint Singh; Tyron Love; Colwyn Thomas; Mandy Kok; Peter Court assisted by Heather Miller and Bryan Hiles and Val Adamson.

Additional thanks are due to Margie Coppen for seed funding for renovations and Brandhouse for the new fridge and for decorating the bar. Patti Jansen provided advice in terms of colours, samples etc and Trish Venturas donated furniture. Mel Akal provided fabric for the tables and Joan Lomas supplied the curtains at entrance. Donations were also received from a number of people to assist with the upgrade.

The aforementioned Kwa-Prefects are Marc Kay (Kwa-Theatre); Ewok aka Iain Robinson (Kwa-Music); Neil Coppen and Karen Logan (Kwa-Cinema); Mlu Zondi and Shana de Kok (Kwa-Dance); Jacobus van Heerden and Genevieve Akal (Kwa-Atmosphere), and Illa Thompson (Kwa-Admin).
