DANCE AFRICA... (article first published : 2007-03-24)

Continental music giant TV Channel O has scoured the clubs in seven African cities to find the best African freestyle dancer on the continent. The show kicked off with preliminaries in February and the producers are now ready to unveil the sweat, tears and torn ligaments endured during the competition.

The show kicks off on March 29 at 20h00 with the Jo’burg episode filmed at the Rock in Soweto. The judges on the night were Bad Boy T, Jaqcui from the pop girl group Jamali and Speedy.

So far, it is anybody’s guess as to who will take the coveted title of Africa’s greatest freestyle dancer. Ten finalists made it to the choreography session conducted by Angelo Collins; the show’s choreographer who whittled the dancers down to two with his rigorous training. Angelo hails from Cape Town and has performed in many high profile events including a performance with Danny K at the “46664” concert in 2002 as well as choreography and performance with Danny K for Usher’s tour in the same year.

The winner will walk away with fabulous prizes; a chance to be in Malaika’s latest music video, a two week paid up tuition programme with Dance Umbrella as well as a chance to dance at the Channel O Africa Music Video awards which will be held in October this year.

Watch next week Thursday as Lungile, the host, unveils the two finalists from Johannesburg who will battle it out with other finalists from the other cities.

Channel O is available on channel 87 on the DStv bouquet. The show premiers on March 29 at 20h00 with a special rebroadcast on Tuesdays also at 20h00.
