JOMBA! & KZN DANCELINK CHOREO LAB (article first published : 2007-03-7)

The Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) has announced that the Jomba! Contemporary Dance Experience will this year focus on dance development programmes culminating in its 10th edition, not in 2007 but in 2008.

As an integral component of this process, KZN DanceLink and Jomba! will jointly produce a Choreographic Residency Laboratory during 2007.

Aimed at enriching the skills, the choreographic and technical abilities of KwaZulu-Natal choreographers and utilising the expertise of both local and international mentors, the Choreo Lab shall operate in two phases.

During Phase 1, nine selected eThekwini-based choreographers will participate in a two-week mentored workshop between May 28 and June 09. The first week will be dedicated to composition with the choreographers only, each of whom will invite a dancer to work with during the second week.

Phase 2, from August 13 to September 2, will continue the process with the same choreographers, under the mentorship of experienced tutors - this includes work with a guest technical expert.

Samples of some of the works produced through the Choreo Lab may be presented as "Works in Progress" as a special Jomba! showcase during August.

Interested artists must submit an application with a CV and a strong motivation for inclusion into the programme. Only choreographers who have already produced work for the stage will be considered.

Applicants need to state availability for the complete two-phase series, and will sign a commitment contract if selected.

Closing date for applications is March 16 and applications should be submitted to: petertaylor@letni.co.za or fax to 031 205 0568.
