Running until March 17, 2007, the FNB Dance Umbrella 2007 offers exciting new dance programmes at various venues in Gauteng.

Durban choreographers Musa Hlatshwayo, Sifiso Majola, Mdu Mtshali and Mlu Zondi will appear at this prestigious annual contemporary dance festival.

Programme 12 on March 3 and 4 at 20h00 at the UJ Centre for the Arts will host the much-acclaimed Umthombi by Musa Hlatshwayo. This work was a runner-up in the African Indian Ocean Choreography competition 2006 and has been invited to present it at the Barbican Centre in London later this year. The winner of the African Indian Ocean Choreography Competition, Impro-Vise_2 by Andreya Ouamba from Senegal shares the programme.

Sifiso Majola, a former member of Phenduka Dance Theatre and part of the ensemble that won the KZN DanceLink’s Breakthrough/Newcomer: Male award in 2004, appears in Programme 24 which takes place in the Wits Downstairs Theatre on March 16 and 17 at 19h15. The work is a triple bill that also features Timothy Le Roux and Aja Marnewick.

The final Programme 25 is on March 16 and 17 at 20h30 at the Wits Theatre with works from Constance Kau and Durban choreographers Mdu Mtshali and Mlu Zondi. Mdu and Constance both received the Phillip Stein Grant.

Other highlights for FNB Dance Umbrella 2007 are The Gauteng MEC Awards for Contemporary Choreography and Dance 2006 which will be presented on March 17, at the Wits Amphitheatre before the final performances.

The FNB Dance Umbrella 2007’s Young Choreographers Residency Programme, funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and the National Arts Council, takes place from February 27 to March 11.
