TRIBUTE TO MARJORIE CHASE (article first published : 2006-12-24)

On December 14, 2006, Durban said goodbye to ice skating legend Marjorie Chase.

Born in London in 1918, and a skater from a very early age, Marje eventually arrived in South Africa with Holiday on Ice in 1952 and fell in love with the country.

Determined to make South Africa her home, she became the resident coach at the Durban’s then Olympic-size ice rink and through her encouragement many of her pupils are today champion skaters, performing in shows around the world.

However, it is for her ice shows that she is best remembered, producing as many as 32 in all, in Durban, around South Africa, and also touring to Rhodesia and Moçambique with a portable rink. A perfectionist with boundless energy, she oversaw all facets of those memorable shows like Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin and Cinderella.

In 1978 Marjorie was one of the first recipients of the "Max Staub Star" presented to her by the South African Ice Skating Association for her contribution and inspiration to Ice Skating in South Africa. This award is the highest that is presented to members who have contributed to the sport.

Around 1966 she was acknowledged at The Night of a Hundred Stars for her contribution to the entertainment industry. She also served on the Board of Skating Enterprises since its inception 15 years ago and sat as chairman since 1997. She was thrilled and honoured to have a rose – the Marjorie Chase - named for her.
