LISA MCKELLAR (article first published : 2006-12-18)

Northlands Girls High School dancer, Lisa McKellar leaves Durban on December 19 with a Youth Orchestra comprising musicians from all over South Africa, to travel to China where she will perform along with four other dancers.

Lisa has been selected by Charmaine and Ian Holloway after an audition to select the most versatile dancers to accompany the orchestra. Ian Holloway has taken the orchestra to China for three years and, to add interest this year, the dancers will accompany the group.

The tour takes place under the auspices of Uniart.

“I am extremely excited as this will be my first overseas trip, and I am hoping for a white Christmas,” said Lisa from her home in Durban North. “We will be performing a range of dances from the traditional classical through to Spanish, Irish and contemporary pieces including the Can Can. There will be a performance every day of the 20 days we are in China, in Shenzen, Gungdong Province, Guangxi Chongqing and other cities.”

The dancers rehearsed throughout the September school holidays and are now putting the final touches to the performances.

While the Chinese Government is offering some sponsorship, Lisa needed to get sponsorship for her different ballet shoes, and for this she is grateful to Gary Till of Richmond Plumbers and many others. Costumes have been borrowed from Minette de Klerk’s School of Dancing.

Lisa has been dancing for 15 years and in 2007 will commence studying for a teacher’s diploma with Minette de Klerk School of Dancing. She has trained in ballet, modern, tap and Spanish dancing. While studying she will be assisting with teaching dancing.

“I have been involved in amateur shows in Durban and have even been to Cape Town to perform, but the trip to China is definitely a highlight in my life, especially after the stress of writing my matric exams. I have danced with the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Ballet Company and this year I was a soloist. Ballet is my life and it has been my dream to be a ballet teacher,” she says.
