THREE MEN IN A SQUARE SPACE (article first published : 2006-12-4)

Flatfoot Dance Company presents Three Men In A Square Space with choreography by Sifiso Kitsona Khumalo, S’fiso Magesh Ngcobo, Nkululeko Ntombela and Lliane Loots and video installation by Doung Anwar Jahangeer.

Three Men In A Square Space is Flatfoot Dance company’s latest evocative offering of contemporary dance theatre. Diving head first into exploring the issues and problems men face, this work takes a wry and witty look at what it means to be a contemporary man in South Africa. With the recognisable wit and pathos for which Flatfoot is known, this one hour long dance theatre work is provoke discussion.

Set in the confines of the intimate Square Space Theatre, the three resident male dancer of Flatfoot not only bring their award winning dance skills to this work but have jointly choreographed this work with Lliane Loots, the multi-award winning artistic director of Flatfoot.

Working alongside Loots, Sifiso Khumalo, Magesh Ngcobo and Nkululeko Ntombela offer an up-close and deeply personal view into the lives of South African men that asks the audience to re-think all the familiar stereotypes.

“We see an exploration of male friendship and male boding that offers a gentle and deeply challenging understanding of men,” explains Lliane Loots. “From images of men in bars, to jondolo shacks, to walking the Durban metro streets, the images the dance piece creates are reminiscent of all our collective consciousnesses as South Africans and more than anything, offers us a chance to look at ourselves – and the men in our lives - with love, forgiveness and sometimes a whole lot of humour.”

Layering the work even further is the video artistry of Doung Anwar Jahangeer.

Three Men In A Square Space runs in the Square Space Theatre on the University of KwaZulu-Natal Durban Campus. Performances are from December 6 to 9 and again from December 13 to 16 at 19h30.
