A FIRST FOR COSSACKS (article first published : 2000-03-10)

“Cossack” is the name given to a group of Russians who lived principally on the Steppes that begin north of the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountain and extend eastward to Siberia. Those inhabiting the region of the Don and Kuban rivers are known respectively as the Don and Kuban Cossacks.

Durban audiences will be able to experience a little of the exciting and flamboyant Cossack dance form when the Russian State Kuban Cossack Dance Company pay their first visit to South Africa next month. They will perform two shows in Durban at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on April 22 at 15h00 and 19h00.

Part of the famous State Academic Kuban Cossack Choir, the dancers make up one of the leading and most popular companies of Russia. Their creative work is based on a traditional song and dance culture which goes back close on 190 years. Dressed in spectacular costumes, the artists will sing and dance to traditional folk music from Russia and the Ukraine.

Artistic Director of the Dance Company. Victor Zakharchencko, is a composer, folklorist, a People's Artist of Russia and the Ukraine and a Laureate of the State Prize of Russian. The company has performed to critical acclaim in countries as diverse as Japan, Italy, Spain, Europe, America, Vietnam and Poland. It has also won numerous awards within Russia and in 1987 received the Order of People's Friendship, a top honour for artists in the country.
