LUNGILE (article first published : 2006-09-18)

The Playhouse Company is to present a new dance drama, Lungile – The Most Beautiful Girl in the Land, a unique collaboration between internationally renowned story-teller and author Gcina Mhlophe and multi-award winning choreographer, Mark Hawkins.

Lungile – The Most Beautiful Girl in the Land is a stage adaptation of a story from Gcina Mhlophe’s best-selling collection, Stories of Africa, and her CD, Stories and Songs of Africa. Co-directed by Mhlophe and Hawkins, this visual feast features six dancers and puppeteers, incorporating colourful costumes, the use of multimedia and stick puppets.

The story focuses on a beautiful girl named Lungile who loves birds. When it is time for her to marry, several suitors arrive to propose marriage. But she will accept none of them, saying she will wait for a sign from a special bird that will announce her husband.

Welile Tembe plays the Narrator and Zinhle Gumede is Lungile, with Hlengiwe Mbatha, Sphelele Nzama, Louise Golding, Angela Lardant, Siyanda Duma, Quinton Ribbonaar and Rasta Mzinyane. Costume design and co-ordination is by Derrick Mhlongo, AV by Michael Cross and AV equipment sponsored by Gearhouse. The bird puppet is by Peter Court.

Lungile – The Most Beautiful Girl in the Land runs in the Playhouse Loft from September 22 to October 7. Tickets R45 (R30 children). Book on 031 369 9596 or 031 369 9540 or at Computicket. For sold performances at extra special discounted rates, call Mala Govender on 031-369 9456.
